Owen will not be sold - Kinnear

  • Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear says Michael Owen will not be sold in the January transfer window even if the striker refuses to sign a new contract.

The strikers contract expires in the summer and he will meet Kinnear on Tuesday to discuss a new deal.

"Michael knows I want him to stay and we wont be accepting any offers for him," Kinnear told BBC Sport.

"There is no point in taking any money for Michael when he can score 15 or 20 goals a season for us."

Last week, Kinnear admitted he was not confident of persuading Owen to stay beyond the summer.

"Im pretty confident about everybody else, but Michael is a different kettle of fish," he said.

Owen, 28, has previously pinpointed boardroom "turmoil" as the reason for his delay in agreeing a new contract with the club.

He reiterated his stance on the issue, telling BBC Sport: "I havent spoken to the club about my contract despite all the speculation in the papers.

"I cant do anything until I sit down and start negotiating."

After former manager Kevin Keegans controversial exit in September, owner Mike Ashley put the Magpies up for sale but has been unable to find a buyer.

"We had a few meetings earlier on in the season and things were going fine," striker Owen, 28, told BBC Sport earlier in December. 606: DEBATE
Whilst I am disappointed that Michael Owen will be moving on Im probably more disappointed that we are unlikely to receive any money for him

"Then the manager left as did someone on the board who we were negotiating with - talks havent picked up since."

Owen, who could walk away from the club for free at the end of the season, said: "Theyve got bigger things to fry than sorting out my contract, or the contracts of Steven Harper, Shola Amoebi, Mark Viduka and Nicky Butt - there are a lot of people out of contract."
