Alzheimers stroke link studied
Researchers at Newcastle University have been given £88,000 to examine the link between Alzheimers and strokes. The funds were awarded by the Alzheimers Research Trust charity after a university team showed 25-30% of stroke victims develop the disease.
Post-mortem brain tissue from 50 stroke survivors will be available for study.
The research should help find new treatments for Alzheimers and related dementia, which is thought to affect about 700,000 people in the UK.
Rebecca Woods, chief executive of the Alzheimers Research Trust, said: "We wish the Newcastle research team every success. Their study will increase our understanding of Alzheimers and bring us closer to finding new preventions, treatments and the cure so desperately needed.
"Nearly 3,000 people in Newcastle are living with the daily reality of Alzheimers and other forms of dementia and the devastating effects it has on their lives. "
